Sideways Stories from Wayside School Irony

Mrs. Gorf turned into an apple

In the story about Mrs. Gorf, the evil teacher who turns all her students into apples, the unexpected twist at the end provides situational irony. After the students retaliate against her, and make her turn herself into an apple instead, their yard teacher Louis, takes the apple, which is Mrs. Gorf, and eats it creating a darkly humorous ending.

Joe gets the right answer by counting wrong

The chapter about Joe, one of the students in Mrs. Jewls’ class, shows his struggle with counting. The conflict lies in the fact that Joe’s counting is completely wrong, but his final answer is always right. In an ironic twist, when Mrs. Jewls asks him to count right, his answer ends up being wrong. The entire chapter revolves around this irony. Mrs. Jewls eventually gives up and tells him that he will wake up one day with the ability to count right.

The unfair treatment of Todd

The story about the student called Todd, who always has to leave early because of being specifically targeted by Mrs. Jewls and punished for misbehaving the same way as other students, is ironic precisely for that reason. Even after he heroically rescues the school from robbers, he is still reprimanded and has to leave early. He is even left out of the celebration for his heroism, only hearing it behind him as he takes his leave.

The non-existing nineteenth floor

In the bizarre chapter about a student called Calvin, it shows him going on a chore given to him by Mrs. Jewls to go to a non-existing nineteenth floor to deliver a non-existing note to a non-existing teacher called Miss Zarves. All is well at the end because the non-existing note told the non-existing teacher that Mrs. Jewls will not meet her. It’s a chapter driven by irony.
