Jordan continues to muse on the nature of time, memory, and existence. He wonders how anyone can be certain of what has happened in their lives, or of the sequence in which events took place. He describes a scene of himself exploring an island. There, he finds a hole filled with worn-out ballet slippers. He follows a path from the hole, finds a house, and climbs through the window. From there, he looks into a room with a woman dancing. The woman turns out to be Fortunata. He interrupts the scene to say that he may either be describing a memory or a fantasy, something that has happened in the past or the future.
