Study Objectives

If all of the elements of this lesson plan are employed, students will develop the following powers, skills, and understanding:

    Students will analyze multiple interpretations and artistic renderings of the Salome story, including stage productions, films, Richard Strauss's opera inspired by Wilde's play, and Aubrey Beardsley's accompanying illustrations.

    Students will situate Wilde's Salome within the context of the French Symbolist movement, analyzing his use of surreal, poetic imagery, simile and metaphor, word choice, and the French language as well as his emphasis on the private, immediate, sensory experience of the individual.
