Relationship to Other Books

Wilde was firmly situated within London Aestheticism, but in Salome he also drew inspiration from French Symbolism. To contextualize the play, it may be helpful to consult the following works:

-The Picture of Dorian Gray is one of Wilde's most famous works. It is a Gothic novel (Wilde's only novel) and it was published in 1890, one year before Salome was written. It shares elements of questionable morality, indecency, and the supernatural with Salome.

-Other examples of Gothic fiction include stories by Edgar Allan Poe or Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.
