Unexpected love
Known to be one of the worst rakes in England, Colin has never had any intention o settle down and find a wife. On the other hand, Penelope has been in love with Colin for as long as she can remember but he has never looked twice at her because of her physical appearance. Nonetheless, the two are thrust together upon Colin’s return, leading to both of them spending time together and falling in love with each other.
Personal achievement
Despite being widely travelled and intelligent, Colin lacks a sense of personal fulfillment in his life. Penelope calls him out on this, stating that he shirks his responsibilities and runs away from them by reveling. Indeed, Colin feels jealous of Penelope when he realizes that her writing career is flourishing and profitable, whilst his is still in its early stages.
Social stature
When Penelope realizes that she has been exposed as Lady Whistledown, she feels a sense of pride in this achievement. But, Cressida steals this from her and tells the ton that it is she who is Lady Whistledown. Colin reveals to Penelope that it is better to let Cressida take the fall, suggesting that because she is beautiful and well liked in the ton, she will recover from the public fallout, where Penelope will not, being the social pariah that she is.
