Day 3

Rhinoceros Lesson Plan

Classroom Activities

  1. 1

    Primeval Integrity

    Kind of Activity:

    Research

    Objective:

Students will be able to delve more deeply into the rhinoceros as a metaphor for fascism

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.9-10.7, CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.9-10.8, CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.9-10.2

    Structure:

Continue discussing with students how the rhinoceros metaphor has evolved. There's now an ethical dimension to it: Berenger argues that one needs to be human to reason morally, and Jean argues that there exists a "primeval integrity" before he becomes a rhinoceros, and that that itself may be more moral. Review the vocabulary word with the students, and then ask what they think Jean means by "primeval integrity."
