Suspenseful Story Guidelines

Kind of Activity:

Collaborative Writing

Objective:

Students will analyze a number of suspenseful stories and deconstruct the primary elements of suspense.

Common Core Standards:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.11-12.2, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.11-12.3

Structure:

Before the activity, gather 2-4 suspenseful short stories for students to read. Consider one or all of the following stories.

· “A Haunted House” by Virginia Woolf

· “The Grownup” by Gillian Flynn

· “Royal Jelly” by Roald Dahl

· “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury

· “The Hand” by Guy de Maupassant

Have students read 2-3 of the stories for homework. Require that they either annotate or write a summary of...
