How would the narrator’s behavior be different if she behaved like the mistress of Manderley?
Because of the narrator’s insecurities, she refuses to assume control of Manderley and act like a true hostess. If she felt capable of fulfilling her role as mistress, she would not avoid Mrs. Danvers. She would not surrender the West wing to Mrs. Danvers but would rather assume possession of the entire house. She would not have hid that she broke the china cupid but would have understood that Rebecca’s possessions have passed on to her, so while she may enter her new home with humility, she still would act like it was her home.
