    Maggie and her husband only live as a married couple for 608 days. Maggie initiates the divorce at age 29 because she wants freedom. Therefore, Heisey depicts Maggie as a modern woman who is independent in making choices that affect her future. In other words, women in the modern world have a voice, and they can separate from their husbands if they think the marriage is not working.

    Why are Maggie’s friends distancing themselves from her?

    After Maggie becomes broke and dejected, her friends start seeing her as a burden. Maggie orders hamburgers for dogs and eats them at 4am because she does not want anybody to know. It is ironic that when Maggie needs her friends the most, they distance themselves because she does not have any value for them.

    After divorcing Jon, Maggie does everything that makes her happy, including dating several men online, attending night parties, and having multiple sex partners. However, life drastically changes when she realizes that her bank accounts are dry. Maggie becomes depressed and mentally unstable after recognizing her life is messed up.
