Maggie

Maggie is the central character in the novel, and the whole narrative revolves around her divorce from Jon. Maggie is pursuing her Ph.D. studies majoring in English literature. As the novel begins, Maggie is 29 years old. She divorced her husband, Jon, after 608 days of marriage. Maggie is the one who initiates the divorce because she wants to be free and do whatever she wants. At some point, Maggie sees Jon as a burden.

With time, Maggie starts questioning her decision to divorce Jon. However, she blames herself for every step she takes toward the divorce. Maggie ends up living in misery and hopelessness because she is disappointed at the turn of events. Maggie's bank accounts start running dry, and she finds it hard to sustain her lifestyle. Friends start distancing from Maggie because she is a burden to them. Looking at her studies, Maggie is still determining if she will finish her dissertation.

Jon

Jon is Maggie's husband. Jon first meets Maggie in their first year of university. During the second year, Jon feels that there is more between him and Maggie than ordinary friendship. Jon marries Maggie immediately after finishing their undergraduate studies. However, the marriage only lasts for less than two years.

Merris

Merris is Maggie’s tough-academic advisor during her postgraduate studies. When Merris learns that Maggie is divorced, she gives her support to cope with the current situation to ensure she does not interfere with her studies.

Amy

Amy is Maggie's friend and a fellow divorcee. Amy encourages Maggie to join chat groups and the dating world to avoid boredom. However, with time Maggie finds that chatting with men is not a solution to her loneliness.
