Amelia, Timber, Dick, and Digger are four homeless friends featured in the book Ragged Company by Richard Wagamese. The four are used to living in the streets. A cold snap descends on the city, and the four are forced to seek refuge in a movie theatre. The suggestion came from Amelia. Initially, they feel out of place. However, as they get familiarized with the new place, they start feeling at home. Indeed, the four started going to the movies regularly. At the cinema hall, they meet Granite, who has become bored with a journalism career. The destitute fellows befriend Granite, who eventually comes to their aid.
As luck would have it, Digger wins a lottery jackpot worth 13.2 million dollars. However, he decides to share the amount with the rest of his friends. The tussle ensues, and they are stopped from claiming the prize due to a lack of identification cards. Granite offers to help them, and finally, they are given the award. The prize changes their lives completely.
Richard Wagamese narrates circumstances under which every person ended up in the street. Each character among the four tells their own story about ending up in the street. Despite having challenges, the four find their fortunes and start enjoying life.
