Rabbit is working for Mrs. Horace Smith, a parishioner of Eccles'. Eccles helped get him the job, which consists of working on her late husband's eight acres. She claims he was the gardener and she knows nothing of the work: she's a farmer's daughter and would much rather have had alfalfa sprouts or buckwheat growing.
