Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002 Film) Quotes

Quotes

"Half-caste children have been gathered up and brought here to give them the benefit of everything our culture has to offer. For if we are to fit and train such children for the future, they cannot be left as they are, and in spite of himself, the native must be helped."

A.O. Neville

Neville's statement is one of aggrandizement and delusion. He believes he is giving these girls the chance of a lifetime, a future. In reality, he is dictating how one must live in order to have semblance of a life.

"They make me sick, these people, they make me sick."

Molly

Molly's statement is simple, direct and clear. The reality of what is happening to her and her family is lost upon those attempting to give Molly a "life." In addition, this statement reveals that this young woman knows it.

"If only they would understand what we are trying to do for them."

Neville

Neville's statement is one where we understand that he actually believes that this is the only way for these girls to have a life. He's bought into the lie that he continues to perpetrate and is blinded by an allusion of "helping" these girls.

"This is your new home. We don't use that jabber here. You speak English."

Miss Jessop

Miss Jessop says this to Gracie when she speaks in her native language. This quote is a perfect example for how Aboriginal children are deprived of their cultural heritage and native language while trying to “civilize" them and make their “blackness” go away.
