In oder to better understand Paradise, students will need a strong knowledge of black history in America, including a history of slavery, Jim Crow, segregation, the Civil Rights Movement, and racism. Encourage students to use internet sources to carry out research, both for longer term projects and to fill in their general knowledge as they go.
Several of the classroom activities involve technology: there are projects designed to reflect contemporary media consumption. Several activities also require internet resources for research.
