Note the diction (“tortured,” “thrust,” and “dirty”) reflecting a rather unsavory character. He is “reposing at full length, smoking a long clay pipe,” which illustrates his appreciation of comforts in life, and his “ornamented” fingers show his aspirations of wealth. The “snuff-coloured coat,” “orange neckerchief,” and “reddish” hair give him an overall red-orange color often associated with danger, perhaps signifying his willingness to endanger himself by undertaking risky business. He is impressed with his own weak legs in his top-boots, perhaps indicating that he has a...
