    Examining Tone

    Individual Writing

    Objective:

    define tone, identify the tone of the novel and its function

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.9-10.4

    Structure:

    This activity is designed to follow or build off of Thought Question #1, in which the class discusses Dickens' tone in the novel and defines tone as “the attitude of the author toward the subject.”

    Provide students with a list of words (example here). Have them mark 5 words that best describe the tone of Oliver Twist in one fashion, and then mark 3 opposite or substantially different tones in another.
