Lois Lowry was born on March 20, 1937 in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Katharine, a teacher, and Robert, an army dentist stationed near Pearl Harbor. Lowry learned to read at an early age, and she loved to create stories in her mind as a child. She was the middle of three children: she had an older sister, Helen, and a younger brother, Jon. The family moved frequently due to Robert's military work: Lowry lived in Tokyo for two years, New York City, and Washington D.C. before she graduated from high school at sixteen and matriculated at Pembroke College.
