Structure:
Lois Lowry often uses vivid visual and physical descriptions to give the sense of a location or scene. Read aloud to students a couple of passages where this skill is evident—for example, the description of the soldiers' arrival at the apartment in Chapter 5, or the description of the house and the meadows at the beginning of Chapter 7. Can students picture the people, the scene? What in Lowry's writing helps them to do so?
