Epigraphs

Objective:
Students will be able to understand how the chapter epigraphs contribute to a deeper understanding of the story.

Structure:
Each chapter opens with a poem excerpt that relates in some way to the events of the chapter. For example, Chapter 19, “Angel Visits,” opens with lines from a Henry Vaughan poem, “Ascension Hymn”: “As angels in some brighter dreams/ Call to the soul when man doth sleep/ So some strange thoughts transcend our wonted themes/ And into glory peep.” This relates to the chapter in that Bessy shares that she dreamt of...
