The reader learns that Alex is the only student in the entire university who can see ghosts without using magic. Therefore, Alex is the most preferred candidate to oversee the activities of the rituals without being detected.

After the rape incident, Alex realized that she had the power of seeing ghosts without using magical powers. Alex dropped out of school and got trapped in drug abuse to escape the ghosts. Later, Alex met Dean Sandow, who offered her a place to study at Yale University and recruited her as the head of cult activities within the university.
