Galax ‘Alex’ Stern
Alex is the novel's protagonist, and she was 20 years old when she joined Yale University. During her childhood, Alex was raped by a ghost. Later, Alex was initiated into a cult in the university by Dean Sandow.
Dean Sandow
Sandow is the leader of Lethe House at Yale University, and he is the one who allows Alex to join that prestigious university. However, Sandow recruits Alex as a member of the secretive societies’ within the university to ensure all the activities go as planned.
Daniel
Daniel is commonly referred to as Darlington, and he is a student at Yale University. Darlington is also a member of the secretive societies on campus.
Pamela Daws
Pamela Daws is a graduate student at Yale University, and she is a member of the Lethe House, a secretive society operating within the university. When Pamela realizes that there is a dead body in the university belonging to Tara, she calls Alex to investigate her killers.
Tara Hutchins
Tara Hutchins is the mysterious girl found dead in the university’s gym. Detective Turner is called up to investigate the matter.
Detective Turner
Detective Turner is an investigative officer from the police department. Turner also is a member of the secretive Lethe House. When Turner is called to investigate the cause of Tara’s death, he concludes that the secretive societies are not involved in the murder.
Professor Belbalm
Belbalm is a professor at Yale University, and she is the one who hands over the summer's internship to Alex.
Len
Len is Alex's boyfriend, and he is the one who introduced her to drug abuse when she dropped out of school.
Lance
Lance is Tara's boyfriend, and he is the main suspect in Tara's death.
Mercy
Mercy is Alex's roommate, and she is sexually assaulted by Blake, who uses compulsion magic which is also used by the secretive societies in the university.
Blake Keely
Blake is a student at Yale University who sexually assaults Mercy. Balke is humiliated by Alex when she records a video of him eating feces.
Berthram North
Berthram North is one of the ghosts on campus who works closely with Alex.
