Is there a story told in "Notebook Fragments," or simply a portrait of a person? What makes you think so?
Some students may feel that the notes are akin to notes that they themselves make, or that they've read other people make: reminders, passing thoughts, resolutions. Others may see the speaker as taking a journey, moving from more desperate—perhaps in the throes of drug addiction, as implied by "I promise to stop soon"—to thinking of their mother with love and living in memory of someone beloved. Students should consider why Vuong chose this fragmented form, either to tell a story or to create a deep character study.
