The Humanity of Clones
Kind of Activity:
Group Work
Objective:
Examine the questions raised by the clones in the novel.
Common Core Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.2, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.10
Structure:
Since Never Let Me Go is narrated by a clone, it would be difficult for the reader to question the humanity of clones. It's take for granted that Kathy is a fully-realized human being, because she thinks of herself as one. However, the non-cloned people of the novel don't seem to think so. Even the guardians, who raise them as children and come to love them, are portrayed as being uncomfortable with or even afraid of their students.
