My Own Words Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Gender Equality

Gender equality is a key concern of Ginsburg's. As a female lawyer, she experienced a lot of sexism in the workplace and fought against legal discrimination on the basis of sex throughout her career.

Anti-Semitism

Anti-Semitism is a key motif of Ginsburg's writings and heavily influenced her opinions. Ginsburg was born in 1933, meaning she was alive during the Second World War, and the horrific persecution of Jewish people in Germany. This is something she actively fights against in her works and is an issue close to her heart.

The Constitution

The Constitution is essentially a symbol of the American legal system, and certain unalienable rights that American people have. In various ways, the constitution has been interpreted and altered as society changes, and it is something Ginsburg worked with closely during her legal career.

Gloria Steinem

Gloria Steinem is an American feminist and political activist, who Ginsburg admired. In this text, she is represented as a symbol of positive action against discrimination and inequality.

The Law

Although there are many ways of enacting social change, Ginsburg focused heavily on legal aspects of change. She believed that the legal basis of sexism and discrimination must be confronted before any other kind of change would be entirely effective.
