“He was a victim of fate and had been since the day he was born.”
The quote is a reflection of Murtagh’s past. While growing up, Murtagh endured hardships, especially when forced to work for Galbatorix. Murtagh’s mother gave him away when he was born because his father was a stubborn dragon rider. However, Murtagh had to undergo difficulties to strengthen him because he was destined to be a future leader of the Empire kingdom.
“I do not belong to either the Varden or the Empire. Nor do I owe allegiance to any man but myself.”
At first, Murtagh is unwilling to support the Empire or the Varden sides. Murtagh says these words to show his stand concerning the future of these two kingdoms. Murtagh wants enough time to make a sound decision on which side he should fight for. At last, Murtagh decides to join Varden to assist Eragon and Saphira to escape safely.
“You must be willing to protect yourself and what you cherish, no matter the cost."
Murtagh does not believe in giving up in life. When Murtagh arrives in Varden, he is imprisoned after Ajihad discovers he is Morzan’s son. However, Murtagh does not give up while in prison because he makes new friends like Nasuada and tells them of his capabilities. When Ajihad hears that Murtagh is a warrior, he gives him a chance to prove his strength by fighting alongside the Varden leaders against the Urgals. Murtagh proves his proficiency in using swords by killing several Urgals. At last, Murtagh joins the Varden and emerges the new leader of the Empire Kingdom, but he rules with an iron fist.
