Trace the various prejudices expressed against different nationalities. Why might Christie have her characters articulate these stereotypes?
Christie appears to let her characters behave and speak as they. do in order to expose and eventually undercut stereotypes. In addition, Christie was also reflecting contemporary biases and battles between countries, as well as America's simultaneous intense power but derided culture at that point in history. M. Bouc touches on all three with his comment, “There is a large American on the train, a common-looking man with terrible clothes. He chews the gum, which I believe is not done in good circles.”
