"Your Honor, every one of these letters is addressed to Santa Claus. The Post Office has delivered them. Therefore the Post Office Department, a branch of the Federal Government, recognizes this man Kris Kringle to be the one and only Santa Claus."
Fred delivers the letter to Santa Claus from the post office as evidence in court. This becomes what is needed to allow Kris Kringle to go free as the Judge dismisses the case from this evidence.
"Faith is believing when common sense tells you not to. Don't you see? It's not just Kris that's on trial, it's everything he stands for. It's kindness and joy and love and all the other intangibles."
Fred makes it clear that he isn't just representing a man. Rather, he is defending the ideals people must be able to live by in the world. He is standing for more than the law, but what is right and wrong.
"Well, I hate to disagree with you, but not only IS there such a person, but here I am to prove it."
Kringle is asked by Doris to admit that he is not Santa Claus. Unfortunately, he cannot do that, as he himself is Santa in the flesh.
