Michael Vey: Battle of the Ampere Book 3 Imagery

The Glow

The electric children (sometimes known as Glows) have a distinctive glow about their skin. Some are brighter than others; Michael grows bright when his power is supercharged, and McKenna's special power is giving off extraordinary light and heat. For the most part, though, the glow gives away a person with electric powers and alerts the reader that this character is of importance.

The Eagles and the Chickens

Throughout the series, Dr. Hatch refers to his electric Elgen Academy pupils as "eagles." These eagles have the right to soar over and use the common "chickens" of the world as toys or instruments to use for their own advantage. This imagery peppers his speeches and recurs many times throughout the novel, echoing his philosophy of the superiority of strength.

Sparks

When Michael gets stressed or emotionally tense, sparks and tendrils of electricity begin to fly from him, especially when he's near Tessa, whose power amplifies his own. This electrical representation of a scene's emotional mood is beginning to replace the imagery of his facial tics to represent the level of tension as he grows in confidence and ability.

Storm Imagery

The imagery of a storm representing both the characters' powers and the dramatic climax recur throughout the novel. In Chapter 11, entitled "An Electrical Storm," the loyal Glows storm the ship's brig and rescue Hatch by using their powers to take out the guards. Before they do so, Hatch tells the guards that he believes an electrical storm is coming. Zeus's power, throwing lightning bolts, is also evocative of storms.

Chapter 27, "The Calm Before the Storm," also uses storm imagery in a dramatic way. Taylor tells Michael that their stay in the beautiful villa is just "the calm before the storm," subscribing to an often-used cliché for the sake of continuing the storm imagery. The upcoming battle is unsurprisingly going to be difficult, hence "the storm."
