What is surprising about the way the dream sequence presents Heaven and Hell?
The notion that a person can move fluidly between Heaven and Hell by choice might be surprising particularly to students who grew up in active Christian communities, but the notion of Heaven and Hell as beyond choice and mutually exclusive has been absorbed into many cultures. Shaw offers a challenge to Christian theology in this writing, and pushes it further by making Hell beautiful and pleasurable rather than punishing, the Devil pleasant rather than aggressive. What Hell is, per this theological reading, is a place where nothing matters.
