The letter from Fermina is scathing and cruel, an attempt on Fermina's part to finally establish herself in her new, independent life. Florentino responds with a letter that muses on love and life. He continues his correspondence, even though she doesn't return it. At a memorial service for Urbino, Fermina approaches Florentino and thanks him for his letters, which have helped her continue to want to live. He sends another letter of thank you, then waits two weeks, and then shows up at her house, thinking he'll be turned away.
