    Urbino can't enjoy his affair with Barbara Lynch, quite simply, because he is married to Fermina Daza. He is unable to be a successful and satisfying lover because of his commitment to his wife, a commitment he actually does take seriously, even though his lusts have gotten the better of him. The novel has presented Florentino as a successful lover in some sense, and he seems to achieve this primarily through being detached and somewhat self-hypnotizing...
