The story goes back in time to the four years in which Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza were courting and at one point engaged. Florentino is the bastard son of a wealthy shipowner who dies, causing Florentino to leave school and begin working in the Post Office. While working there, he delivers a telegram to Lorenza Daza, and sees Fermina for the first time, falling in love instantly. Florentino follows Fermina throughout the city on various occasions, and eventually becomes so overcome with infatuation he tells his mother.
