Grace Tay
Grace Tay’s real name is Pui Fun Tay, and she is the book's protagonist. She is a Chinese woman who returns to Singapore after living in Australia for many years. She returns to reunite with her mother. Grace also narrates the problems of immigrants living in a foreign country.
Pandora
Pandora is Grace's mother, and she requests her daughter to come home to live with her. The burden of living without her daughter is overwhelming, and she decides to request Grace to come back from Australia.
Madam Tan
She is Pandora's aunt, and she is the one that brings up Pandora after her biological mother abandoned her.
Sonny Tay
Sony is Grace's son, born in Malaysia during protests in 1969. Sony is the grandson of Pandora.
Jonah
Jonah is a rapist who sexually abused Pandora.
Niree
Niree is Grace’s best friend and the class captain. Similarly, Niree is the prettiest girl in her class. However, Grace realizes that Niree is not a true friend because she is a racist. Niree calls Grace a ‘Poo,' a mockery of the Chinese name.
Winston
Winston is Grace's uncle.
