Byron as Satirist

Objective:
To compare a work to its source material

Structure:
Assign students, working either individually or in groups, a portion of Byron's The Vision of Judgement. Have them "translate" it into simpler English, writing one to two sentence summaries of each stanza. Have the class compile its summaries and briefly go through the poem together, making sure they are clear on the content of all stanzas.
Then assign each student a stanza of Robert Southey's A Vision of Judgement. Have them write short essays...
