The film begins by introducing Josie as she goes through her daily routines and interactions. Through this introduction, the audience initially gets a glimpse of Josie’s life that is filled with optimism and heart. Josie's interactions with her friends and family are at best bizarre. She has to deal with Carly who constantly gets on her nerves with her annoying racial comments. Josie eventually puts a stop to her hurtful words by attacking her with a book. This act creates a ripple effect that changes Josie’s life forever.
On top of that, she is in the final year of the school which means more pressure from above to focus and excel academically. Josie can’t help but keep locking horns with Katia, her grandmother who keeps nagging and bothering her.
Josie’s mental state hits dangerous levels when John commits suicide. John was a close friend whom Josie had an unrequited love for. Grief proves to be too much for her. Just like her father unknowingly abandoned her as a child, Josie feels betrayed, wronged, and completely alone because of John’s suicide. Jacob, a delinquent in school offers her a shoulder to cry on during this tumultuous period. Josie finds peace and solace in Jacob’s caring and loving nature.
Josie is further thrown into meeting his estranged father, Michael. He wasn’t even aware he had a child and is now only coming to terms with being a parent. When Josie finally meets her father, she is unable to gauge her emotions. She feels some level of joy for finally meeting him, but she is also bitter at the fact that his father wasn’t part of her life for a long time. After some time, Josie comes to realize that she’s yearned her father’s presence for so long. She takes the necessary steps to build a meaningful relationship with her father.
