Descriptions of technologies
The book is full of vivid descriptions of computers, the internet, and coding systems. The author writes about different mechanisms and principles of work in this spheres so visually and simply, at the same time, that it seems that the reader will be able to evade the Security System or hack the Web System as well as Marcus was doing this.
Burrito
Marcus describes his feelings after he has bitten a burrito with very spicy filling, to which Ange added very brightly and metaphorically: “You know that feeling you get when you take a big bite of horseradish or wasabi or whatever, and it feels like your sinuses are closing at the same time as your windpipe, filling your head with trapped, nuclear hot air that tries to batter its way out through your watering eyes..? That feeling like steam is about to pour out of your ears like a cartoon character? This was a lot worse. This was like putting your hand on a hot stove, only it's not your hand, it's the entire inside of your head, and your esophagus all the way down to your stomach…” This description is so vivid, that the reader seems to feel the same as Marcus does. Thus the reader remembers this moment well, what is actually needed, ‘cause Marcus turns back to it for some times during the text.
A party in Dolores park
The party formulated a slogan which was "Don't trust anyone over 25!", The narrator depicts it in all details, with huge emotional load, and this helps the reader to perceive and understand the atmosphere of the party in particular and the mood of story in general: the reader is impressed with the fortitude, strength of mind of all those young people, who dare to resist the power of their government, not to be afraid to struggle for their freedom.
Tortures of Marcus by DNS agents
Marcus very brightly describes his suffering in the DHS’ prison, and what is important, this suffering is more mental than physical: the agents humiliated him, made him step through his pride and open them all his private life, his secrets, he had to sit in dirty and stinking clothes in front of them etc. Reading about Marcus’ tortures the reader seems to feel the same as the boy felt there.
