Curled Hair

Alan has his hair curled during the story. This is a symbol to his dad that he is a homosexual.

Photography

Douglas is an amateur photographer who's only attempt at printing a family photo is met with him ripping it up. This is a symbol that his family is less important that the half-naked women who's photographs he develops on a regular basis.

Jack

Jack comes to Alan at the end of the play and tells him that he doesn't want him to leave. This is a symbol that his stay there wasn't all for not, that he was loved.

Pills

Carol takes pills throughout a majority of the play. They are a symbol that she is suppressing a deep emotional wound that cannot be eased by the life she is living.

Dark Room

Douglas has a dark room where he develops his photos. It is also where he comes on sexually to Penny. This room becomes a symbol for how Douglas lives his life, in the dark.
