“Live without your sunlight, love without your heartbeat”
In the lyrics from the song “Within You,” Jareth conveys his sentiments about Sarah since she entered the labyrinth. He acknowledges that Sarah views him as a villain, even though everything he does is for her own good. He has gotten used to her presence of which he is certain will soon end and be physically separated forever. The quotation highlights that he has accepted that his fondness for her will persist even in her absence. The words are vulnerable, since he acknowledges Sarah as the sunlight that lights up his world.
“You have thirteen hours in which to solve the labyrinth, before your baby brother becomes one of us... forever.”
The conflict in the film stems from Sarah’s wish to cast his little brother into the world of goblins. As such, the entirety of the film is about the excursion within the labyrinth to beat the thirteen-hour time limit. To Sarah, the journey seems like a punishment or torture but unaware that it is a grander lesson about responsibility and adulthood. Jareth states the line to denote the urgency of the situation in order to pressure Sarah to complete the task.
“Your eyes can be so cruel, just as I can be so cruel.”
The power dynamic between the two main characters initially seems tilted in favor of the Goblin King. Jareth orders the rules and obstacles therefore Sarah appears to be the underdog in the labyrinth. The Goblin King declares his cruelty but assures Sarah that she too has power and can be mean too. His love for her renders him vulnerable to her contempt hence not spared from the same cruelty he demonstrates.
