Labyrinth (1986 Film) Imagery

Opening Scene

In the opening scene, Sarah recites from the play with a costume dress resembling that of a heroine in a fairytale. The moment is cut short after the clock tower strikes, revealing that she is an ordinary girl in a contemporary setting. The imagery shows that a regular modern girl can be a heroine in an enchanted realm which proves right when she enters the labyrinth.

The Bog

Jareth initially mentions the land of stench but the imagery is brought to life after he sends Sarah and Hoggle to the Bog of Eternal Stench. The repulsive and foul-smelling marshland proves to be as unpleasant as they had imagined. The imagery reveals that the labyrinth is treacherous and the challenge indeed has dire consequences.

Ballroom

While in a trance Sarah finds herself in a masquerade ball with the Goblin King having a romantic dance in the ballroom. In it, Jareth proclaims his love for her akin to a fairy tale but she snubs his approach and escapes from the dream state. The imagery shows the romantic aspect of their tale where Jareth is in love with the girl, but Sarah is more focused on finding her brother.

The Escher Room

The final task that Sarah has to complete is a set of stairways inspired by M. C. Escher’s Relativity. The gravity-defying staircases prove to be difficult compared to other challenges which is a test of her resilience and growth. This imagery shows the determination she has in owning up to her mistake and saving her brother from the labyrinth.
