Knock Down the House Characters

Knock Down the House Character List

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Arguably the star of the whole “non-career politician” initiative, Alexandria is a magnetic figure filled with so much energy and passion needed in a candidate. Alexandria on occasion goes down to the streets of New York that she’s seeking to effect change and connect with the people. They tell her she’s out of her mind taking on the powerful establishment. Despite the obstacles, she’s determined to win. As an unknown woman entering into politics against Joe Crowley who has been on the seat for 14 years, it looks like it’s going to go as it has always gone. However, Alexandria is so much more determined to win that she does, becoming the only one of the four to win the election.

Amy Vilela

In the documentary, Amy is campaigning in her constituency, Nevada. She is full of passion as she advocates for reforms in the health care sector. She lost her daughter, Shalynne due to an embolism. This happened because the hospital required proof of insurance which they did not have at the time. She channels all the love, pain and suffering she had to endure living off food stamps and losing a child to the same system she’s fighting to fix.

Cori Bush

Cori is in the streets of St. Louis where she worked as a nurse. A few years ago, in this same street, a protest turned violent instigated by the murder of Michael Brown who was shot by a police officer. These kinds of great human enduring stories are what drive Cori to embrace and be the desperately needed change in the community.

Paula Jean Swearengin

Paula is driven by the devastating results of resource extraction taking place in West Virginia. She highlights several homes where people were infected with cancer because of the ongoing extraction of hazardous material. She is fighting for better policies regarding extracting resources in her community.
