K. Saraswathi Amma: Short Stories Irony

Put in danger by those who were to supposed to protect her

Paru's story is a tragic one. From a young age she suffered a great deal because she had no protection from her family. In fact, what is ironic is to see how Paru is put in danger by her own family, the people who were supposed to protect her and take care of her.

Killed by her mother

After Paru moved to the temple, she gave birth to a daughter. As years passed, Paru's daughter grew up into a beautiful and attractive young woman, thus attracting the attention of many men who wanted to have her for themselves. Paru was unable to protect her daughter from being forced to become a mistress. Ironically, the only other solution she saw was killing her own child. As such, Paru's daughter was betrayed by the person who was supposed to protect her and take care of her.

A place of moral depravity

After Paru got pregnant, she knew she could never return home because her family would never be able to accept her and treat her like family. Because of this, Paru decided to run and seek refuge in a temple, a place where she also found employment. The temple was supposed to be a safe place for Paru and her daughter, a place where they were supposed to live in peace and protected. Ironically, the temple proved out to be a hotbed of depravity and sin.

Beaten by a young girl

Madhavi is seen by her future husband's family as a girl who is extremely innocent and even a little gullible. Because of this, they do not perceive the young woman as being a threat or a danger to their plans. Ironically, however, Madhavi proves to be extremely intelligent and she is the one who arranged everything in such a way that her parents do have to pay a large dowry.

No dowry

Madhavi came from a poor family and her parents were unable to pay the dowry necessary to marry her off. Because of this, the parents decided to find a man who would not demand a dowry. Ironically, they eventually settled for the opposite. The man they chose to marry their daughter did ask for a dowry and for an extremely high one as well.
