Just Mercy contains graphic descriptions of executions and numerous mentions of rape, abuse, torture, and murder. It candidly discusses America's history of racial violence. It may be advisable to warn students about this content both before beginning the book and before certain chapters (the chapters about the mistreatment of children are especially upsetting). Beyond this general sensitivity, teachers should be aware of any students in the classroom that have been personally affected by mass incarceration and harsh sentencing.
