Jude the Obscure Lesson Plan

Relationship to Other Books

Tess of the d'Ubervilles is an earlier novel of Hardy's, published in 1891, that was also met with a bit of controversy upon its release. Similar to Jude the Obscure, it deals with sexuality in a much more frank way than previous novels of the time. Vanity Fair, by William Thackery, is another example of a Victorian novel that critiques the social structure of the time.
