Structure:

Thomas Hardy has filled the text of Jude the Obscure with subtle (and not-so-subtle) allusions to how his characters feel about a given situation, whether they express themselves outright, or do so with a forlorn glance. It is easy to communicate the more subtle expressions of emotion through prose, as the omniscient narrator has the freedom to tell the reader exactly what a character is doing or thinking.
