Chapter 1

In the first chapter, readers are introduced to a happy four-year-old, James Henry Trotter, who lives with his parents by the sea. His parents are killed by a rhinoceros, forcing James to move in with his Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker. They are mean and abusive. James is never allowed to leave their house and is not permitted to have any friends. James becomes very sad and lonely.
