Introduction to Invisible Man

Invisible Man was published in 1952. It tells the story of an unnamed Black American narrator who struggles to find identity and purpose in a racist and fractured world—first in the American South, where he is raised and where he attends a "state college for Negroes." However, after inadvertently showing a White trustee of the College some of the more unsavory aspects of the South's racial history and present, the narrator is kicked out of college by its president, Dr. Bledsoe, and goes to new York City.
