If I Was Your Girl Summary

If I Was Your Girl Summary

Amanda Hardy is boarding a bus to Lambertville to visit her father and stay with him. The young trans girl is leaving Atlanta, Georgia after enduring transphobia for many years. On the way to Lambertville, some men flirt with her but she is non-committal. Finally, Amanda arrives at her destination. Amanda’s father has not set eyes on her after undergoing gender-confirming surgery. Therefore, he doesn’t know how to handle her daughter. Amanda is enrolled in Lambertville high school and befriends several students. Among the students is Bee, a bisexual girl, who has come out openly to reveal her identity.

Amanda’s father cautions her against falling in love with any male students to avoid a repeat of a situation that occurred to her in Atlanta. Initially, Amanda is cautious against boys who seduce her. However, she can’t resist the charming Grant. Grant and Amanda commence a romantic relationship. The two young lovers are a perfect match for each other. Before dating Grant, Amanda reveals to Bee that she is transgender. Bee is an openly bisexual girl and Amanda feels free to share anything with her.

The sweet romance between Amanda and Grant passes the test of time when she lifts the lid on her gender identity. Grant vows to love her the way she is. The vow is justified when Bee tells everyone during the dance that Amanda is transgender. Amanda runs away in shame but Grant follows her. On the way home, Amanda is sexually assaulted by a transphobic bully called Parker. Fortunately, her friends arrive in time and rescue her. The whole situation ends with Amanda going back to school and continuing with her studies. The students do not judge her and she receives a rousing welcome. The novel gives insight into how transgender students endure challenges before becoming true selves.
