I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter includes sexual assault, sexism, homophobia, sex, drugs, unrestrained swearing, and systemic drug-related violence. Furthermore, it portrays the vividly bleak reality that can accompany impoverished immigrant life. Teachers should plan to contextualize these sensitive and mature topics to mentally prepare students for what they are about to embark on in reading the book. Provide a safe space to have a conversation about these topics in the classroom. Reinforce that the classroom, above all, will remain a place for respectful and compassionate discourse, particularly with regard to potentially triggering topics that appear throughout the text....
