Hiroshima Mon Amour Summary

Hiroshima Mon Amour Summary

Hiroshima Mon Amour, although a film lasting 90 minutes, recounts some of the conversations between the lead actor and actress, simply referred to as "Him" or "Her"; "Elle" and "Lui" in French.

Elle is a young actress looking for a dazzling film career in the aftermath of the war, and decides to go to Japan. At first, she is a bit reluctant because of the happening during World War II, but she decides it is the best thing to do. The film she is planning to act in is an anti-war production.

While she is there, she meets a Japanese architect called "Him". The two exchange recollections, especially about the war, but Elle finds it is too painful to look back to her childhood days surrounded by destruction. Him tells Elle that his family was killed during the bombing of Hiroshima, but Elle doesn't seem to care as much as she should.

Eventually, it is time for Elle to return back to France, and realizes this would mean leaving Lui alone. She, however, does not appear to care that much, and decides leaving is for the best.

Overall, despite the fact that they have feelings for each other, those emotions appear to simply be puppy love. There is no real connection between the two, likely because of the war that traumatized their past. The two decide it is simply best to move on, and Elle returns to Paris, never seeing Lui again.
