Hiroshima Mon Amour Background

Hiroshima Mon Amour Background

Hiroshima mon amour is a story of two past-time lovers told through a long (36 hours) conversation. It is a French drama movie written by Marguerite Duras and directed by Alain Resnais. It was published in 1959, originally in French which runs for 90 minutes. The story is retrospective, as there are several flashbacks to the pasts of the main characters, as well as several factual insights given on the Hiroshima bombing, as a comparison to the relationship between the two main characters.

Even though the story is expressed though the two main characters as an affair, the plan and true meaning of the story is presenting the happenings and explanation of the events that happened in Hiroshima. The movie itself had a great reception and earned several prizes and nomination, including an Oscar nomination for Marguerite Duras and a Fipersci International Critics’ Prize in 1959.
